Depression now hits kids below 3

Depression in children as young as 3 real and not just a passing grumpy mood, according to provocative new research. The study is builled as the first to show major depression can be chronic even in very young children, contraty to the stereotype of the happy-go-lucky preschooler. Until fairly recently, “people really haven’t paid much attention to depressive disorders in children under the age of 6,” said lead author Dr.joan luby, a psychiatrist at Washington university in St. Louis “ they didn’t think it could happen because children under 6 were too emotionally immature to experience it”.

Previous research suggested that depression affects about 2 percent of US preschoolers, or roughly 1,60,000 youngsters, at one time or another. But it was unclear whether depression in preschoolers could be “they didn’t think it could happen because children under 6 were too emotionally immature to experience it”.

Chronic, as it can be in older children and adults. Lusby’s research team followed more than 200 preschoolers, ages 3 to 6, for up to two years, including 75 diagnosed with major depression. The children had up to four mental health exams during the study. Among initially depressed children, 64 percent were still depressed or had a recurrent episode of depression six month later, and 40 percent still had problems after two years. Overall, nearly 20 percent had persistent or recurrent depression at all four exams.

Ragas do have curative power

Music therapy is not new to Indians. It is called Gandharvaved in ayurveda where there is reference about particular ragas treating particular diseases.

The raga hindol used in a specific way gave miraculous relief to patients suffering from spondylitis. Lower back and knee pains in other patients also gave similar results. Being an engineer and a student of science, I wondered about the phenomenon behind these occurrences and started discussing with qualified therapists- Dr Himalaya Pantavaidya (M.D). a well-known anesthetist, and Vaidyaraj Sanjay Chhajed (M.D. Ayurveda), a Nadiatadnya (pulse expert), helped me clear my doubts- and I formulated a theory and system of music therapy called Sur-Sanjeevan, based on four major aspects – modern science; mood elevation theory; principles of ayurved; traditions of Indian classified music.

Stress relaxation:

Music can affect one’s moods in various ways. It can relax as well as activate the mind. At the end of a hectic day of work, your brain goes to the beta frequency state (between 12 and 16 Hertz). A favourite piece of slow instrumental music will bring it back to its relaxed alpha state (between 9 and 12 Hertz) and then in Theta state (between 5 and 8 Hertz). Any raga, any ghazal, any western music, film songs, fast or slow music- whatever you like can be used for relaxation. Music refreshes your mind, elevates your mood and prepares you for the next activity. Alaaps in ragas like Yaman, Bihag, Malkauns, Darbari Kanada on flute or violin are particularly effective in soothing the mind.

To perform your work smoothly, to accept challenges, to complete a task in scheduled time, you need ‘positive stress’ Ragas like hindol, Alaiya Bilawal and Bihag Shankara will enhance your willpower and help prepare your mind to face difficult situations.

Feelings like tension, anxiety, grief, anger, fear and depression create disturbances in the mind and generate harmful ‘negative stress’. To reduce tension and anxiety, a feeling of reassurance is required. Ragas like Rageshree and Gavti on instruments like sitar and sarod, played in Madhyalaya (medium speed), should be used for this purpose.

To get relief from grief, ragas like Kalavati and Bihag can be used. For anger, the Noon Ragas like Madmad Sarang and Multani heard several times over give you results. Ragas like Yaman and Bhoop are effective in combating fear, while ragas like Darbari, Sohni and Shankara are useful for depression.

Overcome low self-esteem through yoga

Do you look up to somebody in your life? Do you feel somebody is better than you? If yes, you might be a victim of low self-esteem. A common psychological disorder among many, low self-esteem, as experts opine, is an umbrella term, which if not treated can lead to a number of fatal psychological disorders.

Defining low self-esteem, Dr.Deepali Kapoor, counseling psychologist in Apollo Hospital says, “It is basically what one feels about one-self. Though in my knowledge there is no psychological definition to it, it is considered as a disorder. Low self-esteem is about looking down on one-self, and not respecting one’s feelings.”

Experts also opine that one of the negative side-effects of low self-esteem is that its victim often suffer high stress illnesses, such as ulcers, colitis, high blood pressure, heart disease and personality disorders.Though, there can be many reasons for somebody to look down on himself, many argue that depression is a pre-requisite for low self-esteem.

“Depression is not a pre-requisite for low self-esteem, but it can be a symptom,” says Dr.Deepali.Elaborating on the issue, Dr.Aruna Broota, professor of psychology, Delhi University is of the opinion that other than depression there can be a number of factors that can lead to low self-esteem. “The persons’ relationship with his family is very important in this regard. Most people suffer from low self-esteem from their teenage years due various reasons which also includes parental bullying,” she says.

So, how does one get know that he has low self-esteem? Elaborates Dr.Broota.”The time a person comes to know that he has low self-esteem, half the work is done.” Doctors say people suffering from low self-esteem are usually submissive on the outer side. They hesitate to speak in groups, and are usually anxious people.

Elaborates Dr.Broota,”people suffering from low self-esteem are aggressive and cynical. Some also have habits such as tapping their feet while working and biting their lips.” So, how do we battle low self-esteem? Are there any remedies through which one can overcome this psychological disorder? We asked a few psychologists what they think is the best cure for low self-esteem.

Says Dr.Deepali,”First one should stand up for oneself. He should express himself if he doesn’t like some thing. By doing so, he will be able to make matters clear and will eventually start feeling good about himself and life.”

However, Dr Broota stressed on methods that can help the person alter his thoughts. “There are quite a few ways with which one can over come feelings of low self-esteem. Indian remedies include having food after regular intervals, yoga, jogging, as it is a car die-vascular exercise that generates endorphins that makes a person happy. Other than this we use cognition behavior therapy to cure people suffering from low self-esteem,” she says. Many also stressed on family intervention as one of the most important tool to fight low self-esteem. The next time you think “I am no good, and life is not worth living”, think again. It can be the first step towards developing low self-esteem, the best cure for which is nothing, but to love oneself.
