Tunisian woman pregnant with 12 babies

A Tunisian woman is said to be pregnant with 12 babies. The unnamed teacher and her husband are ecstatic about the pregnant that was achieved with fertility treatment after she suffered two miscarriages. The couple is expecting six boys and six girls, the media reported.

The husband, identified only as Marwan, is also a teacher of Arabic at a high school in their home town of Gafsa, southwest of the capital Tunis. The couples have said, it was an “amazing and wonderful miracle”.

“In the beginning we thought that my wife would give birth to twins, but more fetuses were discovered. Out joy increased with the growing number,” The Daily Telegraph quoted him as telling the local media.

The woman is about to eclipse the American “octomom,” Nadia Suleman Fertility experts have condemned the news, alleging the doctors who treated the couple are “irresponsible” and risking the health and lives of both, the mother and her babies

Simon Fisher, a fertility expert from the University of Oxford said the news of the duodecaplets was “horrendous” and the doctors involved were “irresponsible” to allow it.

“The chances of all of them surviving are extremely remote and the chance of some of them surviving without any problems is unlikely- they are likely to have significant problems”.

Unrest over health hazards in China

Hundreds of villagers in China’s Shaanxi province stormed a lead smelting plant on Monday after it emerged that more than 600 children in two villages had taken ill with lead poisoning.

Monday’s incident is the latest in a number of recent cases of public unrest caused by environment pollution by factories in China’s provinces. While the government has in recent years begun to strengthen its environmental pollution laws, violations are still widespread at the provincial level.

Officials said on Monday the Dongling Lead and Zinc Smelting Group in central China’s Shaanxi province was responsible for poisoning at least 615 children in two villages near the township of Chagqing located near its plant. Officials found that lead content in the water and soil in surrounding areas was dangerously high.

Out of the 615 children who had taken ill with lead poisoning, 166 were in a serious condition and admitted to local hospitals. Officials said in some cases the lead content found in their blood was more than four times safe levels. “The medical test by doctors showed that for 20 out of 30 children the lead in blood was excessive, and 10 had more than 200 mg of lead per litre of blood,” Zhang Yongxiang, a local villager, told the State run China Daily newspaper. The normal lead content in blood is between 0 and 100 mg per litre. “One girl was taken to a hospital because her lead content was 306 mg,” he said.

While environmental laws have been strengthened at the central level, enforcement at the local level remains week, and many say influential companies, which often enjoy close relationships with local governments, escape strict enforcement. It emerged on Monday that Dongling had even passed emission standards tests and inspections conducted by local authorities.

Another high-profile case last year saw more than 3 lakh children fall ill after consuming milk powder tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. Later, investigations found that the Sanlu Company, China’s largest dairy producer, had for months covered up tests which had found its milk products to be unsafe. It also emerged that Sanlu had close ties with the provincial government in Hebei where the company was based.

Next month, the first ever environmental protection lawsuit filed against a government body in China on behalf of residents will be heard in Guizhou province. Usually, affected residents receive little compensation given the weakness in enforcement of environmental laws. But a local municipal court last month, for the first time, accepted a public interest petition filed against the government for a construction project that polluted two water bodies.

“No matter what the conclusive is, we hope it will serve as a warning to government departments that they should fulfil their duty to protect the environment,” Liu Haiying, a judge at the Qingzhen municipal court in Guizhou told China Daily. “They need to gradually realise they are not only under the supervision of the Communist Party and other administrative departments, but also under the watch of citizens.”

Plan to utilize equipment at university for swine flu test

The State Health Department is planning to use the advanced laboratory equipment available at Madurai Kamaraj University for conducting swine flu tests.

Since the requisite machines for testing the samples were not available in private hospitals in the city, the officials of Directorate of Public Health have approached the university which has the ‘Real Time-PCR Test’ equipment needed to carry out A (H1N1) influenza tests.

Official sources told The Hindu here on Sunday that a team of health officials visited the MKU on Saturday to assess whether the proposal was feasible. The university has two PCR machine at the laboratories in School of Biological Sciences and the School of Biotechnology.

Asked about the proposed move by the Health Department, Vice-Chancellor R.Karpaga Kumaravel said, “The University is ready to extend its facility if the State Government is satisfied with our laboratory equipment. We have a social obligation to support the Health Department.”

A two-member team comprising Deputy Director of Health Services A. Palanichamy and faculty member of Madurai Medical College Jhansi Charles visited the university’s ascertain if the university’s equipment met the specifications given the Directorate of Public Health.

Even while agreeing to share the infrastructure, Dr.Karpaga Kumaravel said that the Health Department must arrange for the requisite trained manpower to carry out the swine flu tests.

When contacted, the Director of Public Health S.Elango said that the university would be the immediate option available for diagnosing swine flu. A senior faculty member at the university in the field of genomics P. Gunasekaran said that the Health Department has asked for BSL-3 bio-safety specification whereas the Real TimePCR machine in the university was only of bio-safety-2 level. “Our university is working in the field of molecular biology and not in pathogenic levels. Since the handling of machine is different in the case of swine flu, it is for the Health Department to decide. They will have to upgrade our PCR machine,” Dr. Gunasekaran said.

Number of swine flu cases rises to39 in west Bengal

Even as the number of people who tested positive to swine flu in west Bengal rose to 39 on Sunday, the health department issued guidelines to collect throat swabs on a priority basis.

A large number of people rushed to the city’s three swine flu clinics to undergo test. “Seven new A (H1N1) positive cases were detected on Sunday”, said Dr.Taposh Sen, nodal officer of the state health department’s swine flu wing. He said 21 people were undergoing treatment at various state-run facilities.

The large number of samples being sent in to the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), the only swine flu testing facility in West Bengal, has created a backlog, Dr.Sen said.

“This is causing delays in the detection of patients in the detection of patients in the most vulnerable groups”, he added.

A case in point is that of Akash Chowdhury, who was admitted to the R.G.Kar medical college hospital on Tuesday but doctors had to wait till Saturday to know his results. Admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit, his condition was critical and remained unchanged on Sunday, said Dr.Sen.

The other 20 victims, who are currently undergoing treatment, have been kept in the isolation wards of the Infectious Diseases (ID) Hospital at Beliaghata and the M.R.Bhangur Hospital. As the combined capacity of the two hospitals was only 28 beds, the authorities will have to find alternative isolation facilities.

The health department has issued guidelines that samples collected from four categories of patients will be given priority-children up to 5 years and people above 65 years, a person with an underlying disease such as diabetes, asthma or a pregnant woman, a suspect suffering from breathing difficulties, high fever or diarrhoea and an individual who has travelled abroad or has come in contact with a swine flu victim.

Why should we be afraid of swine flu?

We are not really afraid of typhoid, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, diabetes, HIV, malaria and a host of other infectious and non infectious diseases which are flourishing in our country. The apathy towards the basic issues in health care is really appalling. Why should we be afraid of swine flu alone? The medical profession is busy and happy treating diseases, confining to its own insulated and compartments. I happened to read with concern the comments made by some that we are not equipped to face the threat of swine flu, as if we are already well equipped to face the threat of all other communicable diseases; they go on to assert that the problems we face are due to lack of dedicated infections disease departments and dearth of WHO-trained doctors in the medical colleges of Kerala.

A mater of approach

It is true that we need infectious disease units in each medical college, like the ones we already have; but the only problems is that we do not have an adequate number of doctors to spare to improve the services, to do research and surveillance.

The issue can be solved easily by posting a few more doctors for this purpose alone rather than hunting for WHO-trained doctors. Why not the existing system be made to tackle the problem by reorienting and reorganizing than compartmentalizing? In health care (no disease care), there is only doctor-oriented planning and implementation and no community-oriented planning.

A properly trained MBBS doctor or even an educated person with common sense and some training is more than enough to manage the threat of any public health issue. The general medicine department of any medical college can easily tackle all these if they have a few more doctors and isolation wards. We ignore health care and literally manufacture disease of all colour and shades, and finally we have a museum of all diseases. We have already become the diabetic capital of the world, and now we are trying to overtake sub Saharan Africa to win the first place in the number of AIDS cases, malnutrition and environment-related infections, which produce more morbidity and mortality than swine flu.

The developed countries are worried since they have controlled all infections by proper waste management, safe drinking water and good nutrition for all and press the panic button the moment they come across any one of them.

They would have shown similar panic if typhoid, viral hepatitis, leptosirosis or TB occur in much lesser numbers than we see in India. Why we are not similarly worried about these diseases which kill several thousands annually? Let us not panic merely to show that we are also developed and evolved.

The basic issues:

All communicable diseases are flourishing here because of lack of basic health amenities, malnutrition, poor environmental hygiene, unsafe drinking water, etc. people are now exposed to unchecked consumerist forces promoting lifestyle disorders with an even greater impact on us.

One more world environment day had passed – we behaved like the developed world by planting one or two trees here and there and having a talk on ozone layer and green house effect and that is it. We overlook environmental issue like poor waste management and unsafe drinking water everywhere.

We always ignore basic issues and go for knee-jerk reactions to appear big in front of developed countries. We need to do some homework and introspect and bring well-meaning leaders with a vision for the people on top of every system and make changes to achieve health and prosperity and then start panicking at problems like swine flu. We must try to achieve good environmental hygiene and provide safe drinking water for everyone. We must prioritise and spend on health care first and then on disease care.

Tennis elbow

What is tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is known as lateral epicondylitis; it is caused by repetitive microtrauma to the extensor tendons of the forearm (due to over use) causing pain in the outer side of elbow.

What parts of the elbow are affected?

Pain starts on the outer side of the elbow (lateral epicondyle)

Who can develop tennis elbow?

Almost anyone can develop, mostly who are engaged in repetitive activities that include.

* hand grasping tennis, gardening, swimming, carpentry.
* Golfing, bricklaying, using scissors or shears.
* Squash, changing occupations, picking up a new sport and starting a new hobby.

What are the symptoms?

* Constant pain localized to the region of the lateral epicondyle which is made worse with active contraction of the wrist.
* spreading of pain may down the forearm up to middle and ring fingers.
* Inability to hold a coffee cup or hammer.
* sleep disturbance due to pain
* Band like thickening over affected elbow
* reduced grip strength.

What is the cause?

Overuse of the muscles and tendons of the forearm and elbow causes inflammation, wear and tear in the tendon. The tears try to heal, but constant strain and overuse keep re-injuring the tendon and thus forms scar tissue. Degeneration, bone spurs and calcifications.

What investigations are helpful?

* x-rays rule out other problems with the elbow joint
* Calcium deposits on the lateral epicondyle may be seen.
* Ultrasound-shows problems with collagen degeneration.
* MRI-when the diagnosis is not clear.

What can be done to make pain go away?

The goal is to help the tendon heal in elbow
* Tablets-ibuprofen, voveran reduces the inflammation and pain of sudden onset. Elbow strap-relieves the pressure on the tendon
* Exercises are used to gradually stretch and strengthen the forearm muscles.
* Iontophoresis-apply ice and electrical inflammatory medication with temporary benefits (can last for a period of weeks to several months)
* Ultrasound therapy, hot and cold fermentations, shock wave therapy
* Surgery is done for unbearable pain despite above measures. It can be done using a general anesthetic or a regional anesthetic.
* Tendon debridement
* Tendon release
You do not have to have bad technique or be a couch potato to develop tennis elbow, but eliminating as many causes as possible may be your ticket to cure tennis elbow.

Less is best

How do you keep your eating in check? Here’s one way: visualize your last meal. A recent British study found that women who were asked to write a detailed description of what they’d eaten for lunch that day snacked significantly less in the afternoon than those who didn’t focus on their last meal. Researchers speculate that recalling a specific, vivid memory activates the hippocampus, an area of the brain belived to be responsible for both decision making and memory recall, giving would-be snackers better appetite control.

Obama defends health reform plan

U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday strongly defended his ambitious plan, calling it vital for recovering from the worst recession to hit the U.S. since the great depression.

“Even as we rescue this economy from a full-blown crisis, we must rebuild it stronger than before. And health insurance reform is central to that effort,” said Mr.Obama at a prime time news conference at White House, aimed at taking his case for health reforms to the people.

Mr. Obama’s nationally televised press conference comes as he has been facing criticism from the opposition Republicans for his decision to overhaul the health care system.

“This is not just about the 47 million Americans who have no health insurance. Reform is about every American who has ever feared that they may lose their coverage if they become too sick, or lose their job, or change their job,” said Mr.Obama.

“It’s about every small business that has been forced to lay off employees or cut back on their coverage because it became too expensive. And it’s about the fact that the biggest driving force behind our federal deficit is the skyrocketing cost of Medicare and Medicaid,” he asserted. Mr. Obama warned that if the spiralling health care costs are controlled, the U.S. will not be able to control its deficit.

“If we do not reform health care, your premiums and out-of-pocket costs will continue to skyrocket. If we do not act, 14,000 Americans will continue to lose their health insurance every single day. These are the consequences of inaction. These are the stakes of the debate we’re having right now,” he said.

Criticism:

Referring to the growing criticism against him, which has also pulled down his approval rating, Mr. Obama said: “I realise that with all the charges and criticisms being thrown around in Washington, many Americans may be wondering, what’s in this for me? How does my family stand to benefit from health insurance reform?”

Responding to his critics including Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who has come out on a series of news channels in the past two days, the President said: “Tonight I want to answer those questions.”

Exhausted? Get yourself checked

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. This happens either due to defective insulin secrection or action or both helps in burning of glucose obtained from food to give energy. There are two major types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes (earlier called juvenileonset or insulin-dependent diabetes), usually develops in children or young adults. In this type, the body completely stops producing insulin.

In type 2 diabetes (previously known as adult-onset or non insulin-dependent diabetes), the body produces some insulin, but it is not enough. Moreover, there is insulin resistance. In other words, the available insulin does not work properly. In both types of diabetes, the signs and symptoms are similar.

Symptoms of diabetes

These include
*being very thirsty
*frequent urge to urinate
*weight loss
*increased hunger
*blurry vision
*irritability
*tingling hands or feet
*skin, bladder or gum infections
*wounds that don’t heal
*itching in the genital areas
*extreme unexplained fatigue

It must be remembered, however that up to 50 percent of patients with diabetes may not have any symptoms at all. Such cases come out only during routine investigations such as master health checkup and pre-employment checkps.in this case, people live for month, even years without knowing they have the disease. Often diabetes attacks so gradually that symptoms may not even be recognized.

Diagnosis of diabetes.

Diabetes should be ideally diagnosed after an oral glucose tolerance test (GTT). This helps to pickup early status of the disease. The test involves testing of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and two-hour plasma glucose (2hr PG) after intake of 75 Gms of glucose dissolved in water the diagnostic cut off for diabetes and the two “pre-diabetic stages” namely impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) are given in the table below.

Those who have pre-diabetes i.e. IFG or IGT are at increased risk of developing diabetes. Such individuals must undergo a GTT at least once a year and should follow a proper diet and exercise program and if overweight, reduce weight in order to prevent diabetes. Diabetes can also be diagnosed, if random or casual plasma glucose is greater than 200 mg/dl or more on more than two occasions in the presence of symptoms of diabetes.

Thus, early detection is the key to prevention and effective control of diabetes. As diabetes is largely asymptomatic, regular screening for diabetes is of utmost importance. One should not wait for symptoms like thirst, excess urination and weight loss as they are late symptoms. If one has a family history of diabetes or is over weight, one should undergo a prevention diabetic check-up as soon as possible.

Tea lowers iron levels

THE CLAIM

Drinking tea can lower your levels of iron.

THE FACTS

With its bounty of antioxidants and relatively moderate levels of caffeine, tea is one of the healthiest beverages around. But drinking tea is said to block the body’s absorption of dietary union, potentially causing a deficiency.

Studies have shown that there is some truth to the idea.

Compounds in tea called tannis can act as chelators, binding to minerals and inhibiting the body’s ability to absorb them. Although that can reduce a person’s levels of irons, studies have also found that is unlikely to have much of an impact.

In one study, scientists examined the effect by having people eat a typical meal- a hamburger, string beans and mashed potatoes-and then measuring their iron levels after the meal was combines with various drinks. When the subjects ate the meal with tea, there was a 62 percent reduction in iron absorption.

Drinking coffee resulted in a 35 per cent reduction. Orange juice increased iron absorption by about 85 percent.

But there was a twist. Coffee and tea affected only the levels of non-heme iron, that kind found in grains and vegetables. Heme iron found in meat, fish, and poultry, was unaffected.

Because most Americans generally get more iron from their diets than needed, a daily cup or two of coffee or tea is unlikely to lead to low levels of iron.

Night work dangers

Night work is very dangerous and more deadly when compared to the labor working during daylight hours. Doctor’s view is that working odd hours can make people fat and increase their risk for high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Working night shift may also enhance a person’s risk for Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Scientists suspect that overnight work is dangerous because it disrupts the circadian rhythm, the body’s biological clock. Not getting enough sleep makes your immune system vulnerable to attack, and less able to fight off potentially cancerous cells.

There is no security especially for girls. But now a day’s several studies have found that women working at night over many years were in fact more prone to breast cancer. people feel tired when taking up the night shift as they do not get quality sleep during day-time. People usually take a routine life such as getting up at 7.00 am having breakfast at 10.00 am, working, having lunch at 1.00 pm, taking a brief rest, working and socializing after 6.00 pm.This type of pattern would be disturbed.

Night work is one of the few reasons for the workers being murdered on the job. On the other hand, installing video cameras to record crimes, storing cash in safes, and even having security guards don’t appear to protect employees from deadly violence. Many times guards do more harm than good by mounting on the situations that might be defused with calm. The other disadvantages relates to the amount, time, and quality of sleep. People working in night shift seem to find 5 to 6 hours sleep. These people are out of touch with friends and daytime world. Another problem with shift work is that employees have little contact with human resources to resolve employment issues.

Water and child

Child development is closely related to water in all its aspects. At birth the total weight of the infant is 73% of fluids. Adult having 58% of fluids. Important of water in children:-

1. Children need more water than adults because of their large consumption of energy.
2. Young Infants do not require any addition food or water or any other drinks.
3. Breast milk alone is adequate to meet the hydration requirement even under the extremely hot & dry summer.
4. Infants easy to get dehydration because of infants rate of metabolism is increased that adult.
5. Introduction of semisolid foods during second half of the first year.
6. During this period given small amount of fluids if introduction of water to mix the weaning food & fruit juice.
7. Children should be encourage to drink water if they are not thirst.
8. Child health & development can be affected by contaminated drinking water.
9. Today many children bottled sodapopar soft drinks to be taken.
10. Soft drinks contain sugar & caffine, it leads to child dehydration.
11. If the children taking unhygienic & contaminated water to develop water- born infections disease.

Water Born Diseases:-
Bacterial infections:-
-Botalism
– Cholera, E- coil, Dysintery, Leptospirosis, Salmonellosis, Typhoid fever
Viral Infection:-
Gastro enteritis, SARS (CORONO VIRUS), Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis
Protozol Infection:-
Amoebiasis, Giardiasis
PARASITI INFECTION:-
-Taeniasis – Ascariasis, Enterobiasis.

Preventive Measures:-
1. Advice the Parents 5-6 months of child’s to given exclusive breast feeding.

2. Explain the family members to be maintained clean environment.

Diabetes and pregnancy

Diabetes is increasing throughout the world at an alarming rate. More and more young people are diagnosed to have diabetes.

Consequently, number of pregnancies complicated by high blood sugar is also increasing diabetes during pregnancy is a very serious health problem affecting both the mother and that baby. It requires lot of effort from the doctors and the pregnant women to cope with it.

CLASSIFICATION:

Diabetes in pregnancy can be of two types

1. Pre-gestational Diabetes- Diabetes is present even before the patient becomes pregnant.

2. Gestational Diabetes – Development of diabetes for the first time during pregnancy. It usually resolves after delivery.

PROBLEMS OF DIABETIC PREGNANCY:

In Pre-gestational diabetic, recurrent abortions, still birth, cardiac and neurological malformations, macrosomia (larger baby) can happen to the baby. In both pre-gestational and gestational diabetes, after delivery, baby may develop hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, jaundice, hypocalcemia (low calcium).

For the mother, chances of caesarean section are high and she is at high risk for PIH (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension) and Birth canal injuries during delivery.

Gestational Diabetes (GDM)
Pregnancy induces a state of insulin resistance and susceptible persons develop GDM.

Risk factors for GDM:

1. Obesity.
2. Age more than 25 years
3. Family history of diabetes.
4. Previous history of large baby (>4kg)
5. Bad obstetric history (recurrent abortions stillbirth etc.,)
6. Presence of hypertension/dyslipidemia

Whom do you screen for GDM:

Because India is having maximum number of diabetic population, all pregnant women irrespective of the presence of risk factors, should be screened for GDM using 75 g or 100 g “Glucose Tolerance Test” (GTT) around 5th month of pregnancy.

Management:

Management of diabetic pregnancy requires multidisciplinary approach involving diabetologist, gynecologist and paediatrician.

Strict sugar control is very important. It requires lot of motivation, education & counseling to the pregnant mother & their family members.

Blood sugar should be monitored using glucometer at home by the patient & they should aim for near normal blood sugar (fasting sugar should be less than 100mgs/dl and 2 hrs post prandial should be less than 120 gms/dl. Hyperactive kids are just naughty

London: Parents, please note-children labeled as ‘hyperactive’ in school are highly unlikely to be suffering from any disorder-in fact, they are just naughty, researchers have claimed.

A new study in Britain has revealed that only half of the kids suspected of having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are actually diagnosed with the condition by a mental health expert.

Children with ADHD cannot concentrate on school work or played and are easily distracted forgetful or fail to follow instructions. They are also unduly noisy, restless, often talk excessively and butt in to other’s conversations

According to the researchers, school teachers may be over identifying children with possible ADHD diagnoses. “Naughty children may at some point present symptoms but someone with ADHD has them at all times,” lead author Dr Benjamin Keene was quoted by leading British newspaper the daily telegraph as saying. In their study, based in tower hamlets, 52 kids were referred to the child and adolescent mental health services team with ADHD-like symptoms over the course of one year, of those the researchers found that most did not have ADHD.eventually six were diagnosed with ADHD, the study revealed.

Cancer risk not high for radiation workers

A study published in the latest issue of the British Journal of Cancer (BJC, Vol.100, 2009) by the researchers at the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) concluded that the risk of developing cancer among radiation workers increases with the dose of ionizing radiation they are exposed to.

This study and the latest research on cancer risks to populations residing in high background radiation areas in Kerala reported in the January 2009 issue of the Health Physics Journal (The Hindu, Jan 1, 2009) are reassuring.

The results of these studies will have no impact on radiological practices, as the observed cancer risks are consistent with the international scientific consensus on radiation protection.

The dose limits to workers are based on such consensus. The UK study is the third analysis of deaths and cancer incidence among 1, 74,541 radiation workers whose occupational histories are maintained in the National Registry for Radiation Workers from 1976. The present study relative to earlier analyses had longer follow-up (to 2001) and cancer registration data and gives more precise information on the risks of occupational radiation exposure. The registry covers virtually all radiation workers from all the main organizations involved in nuclear and related research and industrial sectors in the UK.

“This is a continuation of a study started in 1976 and it provides reliable information on the health of people working with ionizing radiation.

The results confirm the cancer risk estimates observed in other studies even though, overall, radiation workers have lower cancer risks than the general population” an HPA release quoted Dr Colin Muirhead from the Health Protection Agency and the lead author of the paper.

This indicates the so called “healthy worker effect”. Usually, workers exhibit overall death rates lower than those of the general population due to the fact that the severely ill and disabled are ordinarily excluded from employment (biology-online.org October 2005).

Scientists who believe in the beneficial effects of radiation may argue that this is an indication of hormesis, a view which will be stoutly rejected by mainstream specialists.

Within the cohort, death from and incidence of both leuukaemia excluding chronic myeloid leukaemia and the groupings of all cancers excluding leukaemia (CLL) increased to a statistically significant extent with increasing radiation dose (BJC, January 2009).

It is known that radiation dose not induce CLL. The trend in risk was similar to those for the Japanese A bomb survivors.

The researchers noted that some evidence of an increasing trend with dose in mortality from all circulatory diseases may, at least partly, be due to smoking, a known confounding factor.

So far, specialists have studied the health effects of ionizing radiation on over fifty groups of about two million persons; but the estimates of the long-term health risks from radiation are based largely on studies of the survivors of the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and of groups exposed for medical reasons.

The dose rates in these instances were high and other exposure conditions were also not similar to those faced by radiation workers.

Radiation workers get exposed to low doses of radiation at relatively low rates.

The UK study is ideal as it represented the typical radiation doses to workers in various professions.

Data collected from employers consist of individual identifiers, factors such as date of birth, gender and industrial classification, and radiation dose histories (BJC, January 2009).

“Continued follow-up of these workers will be valuable in determining whether radiation associated risks vary over time or by age, and enables the study of specific cancers and causes of death in more detail” HPA argued in a release (HPA release January 7).

In a separate paper in the same issue of the BJC, researchers at the Childhood Cancer Research Group at the University of Oxford and the Health Protection Agency have shown that their study does not support an earlier finding of a raised risk of cancer in children of female radiation workers.

In a subgroup of women who worked with radiation during pregnancy, a weak statistical association was found between maternal radiation work and children cancer, but the evidence is limited by the small numbers involved and the result may be due to chance (BJC release January 7, 2009).

Let us hope that HPA does not suffer any resource crunch which may adversely impact on such research.

Nutrition and health

Today many diseases are known to be linked to lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, lack of adequate physical activity and poor natural habits. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that nearly one-third of early death and disability stems from nutritional or dietary causes, including too little food in the poorest countries and too much food in the richest.

Nutrition is, in part, a preventive science. Given sufficient resources, how and what one eats is a lifestyle choice. Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not just the absence of disease or infirmity.

Good nutrition is essential for good health and important for physical growth and development, good body composition, and mental development. People’s nutritional state can protect them from predispose them toward chronic disease. Medical treatment for many diseases includes diet therapy. Nutrition is thus both a preventive and therapeutic science.

Nutritional needs vary individually, depending on a variety of factors including age, sex, level of physical activity, metabolic rate and state of health.

To maintain health and function efficiently, our bodies need 13 vitamins and 16 minerals as well as fats, carbohydrates and protein, although it is not a nutrient, our bodies also need plenty of water. By eating a variety of foods in sensible proportion from all the food groups we can obtain optimum levels of every nutrient needed to maintain good health.

Three main rules should govern what we eat:

  • Food should nourish
  • It should help to safeguard health-and when necessary should play a role in fighting ailments or disease.
  • It should also look and taste good.
