Habitat and food mark out tigers in Sunderbans

Living in the intertidal habitat among marshy thickets, having become accustomed to the saline water, and but often without the trademark element of surprise, the Royal Bengal Tiger of the Sunderbans may have evolved differently from its brethren in peninsular India, according to experts here.

Forest Department Officials are constantly discovering aberrant behaviour patterns. The July 17 finding of poisonous snake in a tiger’s stomach is one such example. “While tigers are known to eat snakes, this is perhaps the first record of a tiger eating poisonous ones,” said Richa Dwivedi, deputy field director of the Sunderbans Biosphere Reserve.

“Although it is yet to be confirmed scientifically that the tiger is genetically different from terrestrial tigers as the DNA analysis has not been done, there are certainly many physiological adaptations,” said Pradeep Vyas, the State Forest Department’s chief conservator of forests (Central).

There is strong evidence of the fact that tigers in the Sunderbans drink saline water, says N.C. Bahuguna, director, Sunderbans Biosphere Reserve.

“There are nearly 270 tigers in the Sunderbans, but the few fresh water ponds that were ponds that were created are not sufficient to support this large a population,” said Pranabesh Sanyal, former director. “In any case, there were no fresh water ponds before 1977, so what else could the tigers drink then?

These tigers have to negotiate harsh habitat conditions, apart from non-availability of fresh water. The muddy and marshy areas, dotted with pneumatophores (spiked roots of mangroves which abound in these forests), have forced them to hunt differently, says Mr. Vyas. “When they walk on the wet soil, it is often noisy and they can’t stealthily approach their prey, like tigers normally do.”

Aquatic diet:

Difficulties faced in hunting may be the cause of their alternative food habits, although experts differ on the reasons.

“Studies have shown that nearly 20 per cent of the diet of tigers in these parts is aquatic including fish, crabs and turtles,” said Mr. Sanyal, who suggested that easy availability of these substitutes might cause them to eat this food. At times, even grasshoppers have been found in the stomach contents of these tigers, according to Mr. Bahuguna.

Link between rice intake and diabetes found

Rice is a major source of dietary carbohydrates. But the link between diet, rice in particular, and diabetes has not been studied in great detail till now.

A paper published recently in the British Journal of Nutrition shows a clear link between the consumption of white, polished (refined) rice and the prevalence of diabetes.

Every tenth participant of the 2001-02 phase I CURES (Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiology Study) conducted by Dr.V.Mohan of the Dr.Mohan’s diabetes specialities center in Chennai was chosen for the current study to see for a link between dietary carbohydrate and diabetes. 1,843 people who did not know their diabetes status were selected for the study.

The participants: the chosen participants were then tested for diabetes and their food habits were recorded. The risk factor for diabetes such as sedentary lifestyle, age, BMI (body mass index), etc., were adjusted between the kind/ quantity of food consumed and diabetes.

When the food habits of the chosen participants were studied, it became clear that those who consumed more rice (Polished and refined) were more likely to have diabetes. For instance, the study participants were spilt into four quartiles based on the amount of various food consumed. It was found that people in the lowest quartile consumed about 320 grams per day of rice compared with 516 grams per day by those in the highest quartile.

“What we found was, as the amount of rice consumption increased, the consumption of other food items, like fruits and vegetables, legumes and diary products became less,” said Dr. Mohan. “We found a link not just between carbohydrate consumption and diabetes but the kind of carbohydrate consumed and its effect”, said Dr. Mohan.

Carbohydrate rich:

The carbohydrate derived from polished white rice is 66 per cent of the total carbo hydrate in take.

“Another interesting finding was that as the increased intake of rice was at the cost of other food items,” he said. For instance, in the lowest quartile that consumed less rice, the intake of fruits was about 300 grams per day, while fruit consumption in the highest quartile was 233 grams per day. The same trend was observed in the case of other food items.

But the biggest positive link was found in the case of dairy products. Those having the least quantity of dairy products were more likely to have diabetes; those who consumed the most had less chances of having diabetes.

Polished rice:

“It is not that our eating habits have changed in the recent past. Our fathers and grandfathers had also consumed rice. But the kind of rice they consumed and what we consume today are totally different,” he said.

The rice that we get today is the highly refined and polished variety. “The more polished the rice, the more glycaemic index (GI) it would have,” he said. The GI indicates the glucose-raising effect of a food.

Polishing removes the bran and the germ. While the bran contains fibre, protein and vitamin B-complex; polished rice has only starch, which is nothing but carbohydrate.

According to Dr. Mohan, rice used to be 2 per cent polished earlier; now it is polished to 8 per cent -10 per cent.

The only good news is that increased of the ill-effects of various food items has made many companies produce healthier food products.

Healthy food:

Rice that is relatively less polished is now available in the market. Similarly, many products made from whole wheat are available.

That refreshing Cuppa

Tea is that invigorating and stimulating beverage that we all take for granted but most can’t live without. Now tea is the source of a great career as well. Jobs in this field can be quite interesting. Known as tea management, there are jobs for researchers, plantation managers, tea brokers, consultants and of course, tea tasters.

If you are a nature lover and believe in working in the field, then plantation work should suit you best. The work involves nurturing tea plants, so you must know how to prepare the soil, apply the appropriate fertilizer, choose the right variety of fertilizer etc. Two leaves and a bud is the mantra that plantation managers live by, says Ranjana Dutta, principal and Secretary of the Dipras Institute of Professional Studies.

Processing involves the crushing, tearing and curling of the leaves, which takes place in factories. The tea is then packed and dispatched to auction centre. The various samples of tea from different plantations are tested, blended and branded by tea tasters at the auction centres. Tea brokers who have a background in planting, tasting and a know-how of market trends, auction the tea and the marketing personnel sell the final product. Although computers are now used to blend varieties of tea, a tea taster’s verdict is still considered the ultimate test.

If you wish to take up a career in this field, you must have a liking for outdoor life. You must be physically fit and self-reliant as well. A leadership quality and the ability to deal with labour are added assets for factory managers.

Tea tasters need to have keen taste buds and refrain from smoking, drinking and eating spicy food. Those planning to become brokers should be level-headed and disciplined and be able to strike a good rapport with producers and buyers.

Anybody who has a basic educational background can get into the tea industry, and pick up the skills required on the job. However, a degree in Agricultural Science or a B.Sc. in Botany, Food Sciences, Horticulture or allied fields is preferred these days. Candidates who have specialized in business management or marketing are recruited for marketing jobs.

According to Dutta, Dipras also conducts three stages of practical training. First, a three-day training at STEP – IIT-Kharagpur, followed by a six-week training at a tea estate and then a week’s training at a broker or auction house. New entrants are taken on as assistants at the plantation level. After gaining experience, an assistant can get promoted to the level of Assistant Manager, and then Manager of a tea garden. Most assistants can expect to become managers after 12-15 years of service.

Potential tea tasters selected are trained on the job. Besides natural talent, vigorous training for a number of years is essential before you don the mantle of a professional tea taster and then a tea tasting manager. A tea taster should be able to tell the difference between a mellow cup and a brisk cup and be able to sniff a smoke tint in the tea. His palate should be so trained so as to be able to register even the most minute difference. Tasters also have to coordinate with gardens, look after import and exports, advise researchers on commercial factors like economic viability and quality of tea etc. the world of tea is best suited for nature lovers. However, long spells of loneliness are a common occurrence. Despite the draw backs, many young people are coming into the profession because of the good pay, attractive perks including a comfortable lifestyle. Tea companies or tea gardens, tea broking houses, tea associations and the Tea Board of India offer lucrative positions. Trainees get, on an average, Rs 5,000 while senior professionals draw Rs. 25,000 per month and specialized professionals can earn in the range of 40, 000-50,000 per month.

Traveling with kids…

….Can be tough. But, with enough planning it’ll be a breeze.

Sport the right attitude: Anticiapate trouble but remember to keep your cool. Go with the flow. Children will sense fear only when parents stress. So now you know what you don’t need to do!

You need: Make a list of all medicines you need to carry. Carry a first aid box in case of emergency. A box of wet wipes is handy. Ziplock bags are a boon while traveling, carry some in all sizes.

Right time: Coordinate traveling in cars with your child’s nap timings. It helps. This can work for flights as well. Choose fight timings wisely. One just needs to plan ahead. Get on the plane and let the child explore a bit and soon you will find him/her rubbing their eyes only to wake up fresh when you land.

Take advantage: With the facilities available, Pre choose your seats. Plan what you want as meals or special meals as kids will love it if their meal comes with a toy! If your airline still allows you to board first because you have kids…consider using it, especially if there is only one grown-up.

Carry books/toys: Books and toys can ease the boredom and serve as a positive distraction especially on long flights. Even a set of portable art supplies with crayons, markers and some paper can transform long hours into hours of amusement. Carry toys that your child likes playing with. If it works at home it will work in flights and cars. Or just surprise them with a new one!

Prepare them mentally: Before taking a trip with kids, talk to them about things being different be it food, timing or their routine in general. It will not only make them comfortable but it will also get them involved in what’s happening.

Frequent breaks: This one is for traveling by cars. Break long trips into smaller segments, offering frequent rest stops. Let your child release some energy by exploring the scenery or generally play around.

Papaya mealy bug-a new threat to sericulture

Papaya mealy bug is a polyphagous sucking insect pest and has been recorded on more than sixty host plants in India. But its serious attack was recorded only in a few economically important crops such as papaya, mango, pomegranate, citrus, beans, tomato, potato, pepper, and cotton. In other plants it exists as a minor pest. However sudden outbreak of any minor pest is common owing to various reasons.

The recent trend in the population build-up of papaya mealy bug on mulberry, the sole food plant of silkworm, indicates its emerging pest status especially in south India where mulberry is cultivated intensively.

Infestation:
Papaya mealy bug infestation is typically observed as clusters of cotton like masses on tender stem and veins of mulberry leaves as the insect secretes a white waxy coat over its body. The adult female lays 100-600 eggs which hatch into nymphs in about ten days. The nymphs crawl actively to search for feeding sites and settle in clusters on leaves and stems.

One generation:
The pest completes one generation in a month. The symptoms appear on the leaves as chlorosis deformation and premature drop.hence, feeding with papaya mealy bug infested mulberry leaves adversely affects the growth of silkworm and silk production.

Cultural method:
Planting of highly susceptible host plants such as papaya or hibiscus in the vicinity of mulberry garden should be avoided plugging of the infested twigs and leaves and their burning during early stage of infestation is the best method of eradication of the pest. Indiscriminate use of insecticides in mulberry fields should also be avoided as they induce resistance in the pests and destroy its natural enemy population.

Biological control:
Release of cryptogram’s montrouzieri, an effective predatory ladybird beetle at 125 adults per acre twice a year at the interval of six months keeps the pest population suppressed. Spraying dimethoate control the pest effectively. Leaves can be fed to silkworms 15 days after spraying the insecticide.

Bird Hazards

A collision between an aircraft and on or more birds is termed a birdstrike. Pilots sometimes record a birdstrike while at cruising altitudes, but most of them happen when an aircraft is relatively close to the ground, usually in proximity to an airport and during the circling, descent to land or take-off phases of a flight.

Birdstrikes may cause significant damage to an aircraft and/or, if the birds are ingested into a jet engine a significant and sudden loss of power. If this were to happen during take-off or initial climb of a fully loaded passenger aircraft the results could be catastrophic-loss of the aircraft and the lives of those on board. Any bird is a potential hazard to aircraft and this is especially true as bird numbers and bird size increase.

Unfortunately airports themselves can be attractive to birds-rodents, insects and other small animals are a food source often found in flat grassed areas such as the runway strips. Even so, this problem can be reduced by careful habitat management or bird harassment techniques practiced by airport maintenance and safety personnel.

Further problems may arise because the airport is located on bird migration routes. These may have existed prior to the airport site selection-but may not have been taken into account because the problem was not understood at the time – or have only been recently established because the birds have found an attractive new food source. Care needs to be taken by local authorities in deciding the location of rubbish tips, or when permitting other land uses that may be attractive to birds in this way. Of course these effects cannot always be anticipated with certainty since birds such as gulls have been recorded as traveling 50 kilometers or more their roosting area to a attractive food source.

Agricultural uses may be thought desirable because they are compatible with levels of noise exposure, but they can have an adverse effect on aircraft operations if birds are attracted during seeding or crop cultivation. Birds may also be attracted to pig farms where garbage is used as fodder. Even tree plantings can present a hazard if the species provides an attractive food source or nesting habitat.

Local authority planning schemes often apply strict controls on developments such as abattoirs, cattle feed lots, grain handling, piggeries, canals and marina developments, fish farms, and suchlike. In most cases these uses will not be permitted without a full environmental study. That study should be required to deal with the question of likely bird hazards if the proposed location is in proximity to an airport.

In some instances it may be necessary to consider ways of managing a particular land use in order to reduce its attractiveness to birds, for example the adoption of land fill measures at garbage tips, or enclosed rather than open air activity. Specialist ornithological opinion may be necessary. In such cases if may not be possible to implement immediate changes in land use, but this should not inhibit the adoption of long-term measures which are designed to achieve this.

Hard times easy travel

You need not lose hope if your big annual holiday abroad is under threat because of economic concerns. Rising oil prices may have made flying more expensive; inflation in commodities may have already made hotel stays a tad costly.however, you can still cut a good deal with some fore planning and intelligent money management.

When on a budget, it is essential to research to the last detail, in everything you want to do during the holiday-purists often call this bad tourism since there is more fun in surprise.nonetheless, you may not want to be poorer by a few hundred euros, for instance, during difficult times. That may be because of taking the wrong transport in a city, going to the wrong restaurants, or even not carrying a water bottle.

Here are a few things you can do: pick countries where inflation has been reasonably hedged; a daily does of this newspaper or online economic portals will help you zero in on the perfect destination. Keep a tab on the rupee’s movement against other currencies.

Talk to as many people with foreign holiday experience as you can. Use social networking to your advantage; post questions on cheap localities to stay in a particular city, availability of hostels rather then hotels, places where you can sample the local cuisine etc.

If you are taking a loan, the odds may be stacked against you right now-banks may have already tightened the availability of finance. Considering that two-three banks will be interested in forwarding a loan, there is little harm in playing one against the other to bargain a lower interest.

Do an online comparison of airline ticket and hotel prices. There are numerous websites which aid the process-websites can be handy and faster to search for last minute deals from both airlines and hotels. Hotels and airlines sell inventory directly through their websites, more so when there is strong demand, however, during a recessionary environment, hotels can struggle with low occupancy rates. supplying the room to online shop can help maintain utilization.

Apart from stay and food, transport can be a money-sucking proposition. Familiaries yourself with the maps-roads,metro,water ways-before you land.Having a clear idea on what you want to see, what you want to do will help in selecting the right as well as the cheapest transport available.

Fire

Fire is so familiar; it is both friend and foe, slave and master. Fire is a natural force, yet it was used by humanity’s ancestors many hundreds of thousands of years ago. Later, humans developed the ability to artificially generate fire. The control and use of fire has been a major factor in the development of the human race. The control of fire for warmth allowed humans to migrate into cold climates and build diverse and successful civilizations. Fire for cooling greatly increased the number of foods and improved their taste, ease of digestion, nutrition, sanitation, and preservation. Fire has long been used to drive game out of hiding during hunting and to scare away predatory animals during the night. Fire aided agriculture by clearing the land of brush and creating fertilizer with its ashy residue. With the help of fire, humans have been able to expand farmland and pasture against both climatic and vegetational gradients.

The possibilities of fire have stimulated creative thinking, which in turn has spurred human development. One invention has followed another. The use of fire to harden materials led to pottery, cookware, weapons, and more. The ability of produce ever-higher temperatures led to the smelting and use of metals. The use of fire provided the benefits of sterilization, which advanced public health. Fire controlled inside machinery supplies the energy that underlies our civilization. The heat from the burning of oil, coal, and natural gas is converted into the electrical and mechanical energy that powers our industries, the lighting and heating of our homes, and our ability to travel quickly to any point in the world. As a rough estimate of the benefits of fire, through it, each American today has available for her or his personal use the energy equivalent of owning 100 slaves in the past.

The destructive use of fire shifted from trying to control wild animals to trying to dominate other humans. Fire passed from the individual torch to a method of destroying whole cities. For example, troy was so obliterated by fire that its very site remained unknown to the world for nearly 3,000 years.

Another destructive use of fire has been to deny enemies their prize. For example, on 12 September 1812, Napoleon and the French army reached the hills outside of Moscow and looked down on its green, blue, and gold domes. Upon entering the great city, the French found it to be largely deserted with fires burning throughout. For six days, the fires raged until 90 percent of the city was incinerated. The Russians chose to destroy their own heritage rather than let it aid their French conquerors. Denied the support of a conquered populaces, Napoleon began his disastrous retreat from Russia during winter’s harsh conditions. Napoleon won the military battles but lost the war.

New destructive uses of fire were conceived with time and technological innovation. In the twentieth century,” fire” was packaged into bombs that could be dropped from airplanes. During World War II, entire cities were ignited as thousands of tons of bombs created massive firestorms, killing tens of thousands of people in such cities as Hamburg and Dresden.

Fire has always been an important part of the natural world. For example, about 1,800 thunderstorms are in action around the Earth each hour, and their lightning bolts start many fires. Humans have brought fire from the natural world into the cultural world, expanding its role. We control fire for our benefit, but we pay the price when this control is lost. In the United States today, the abundant strikes of lightning start less than 15 percent of all fires. Humans are the main source of fire ignition in the United States, as well as throughout the world.

Piramal Healthcare move long-term positive

There is no compelling evidence to show that garlic and onion directly promote aggression or negativity. Be mindful though that any food eaten beyond the body’s requirement can cause gas, acidity, heaviness and this discomfort can make you grumpy, dull, irritable, and aggressive. So, pitch your beautiful urge for a pure and peaceful mind on these healing practices

Eat moderate portions. In the muscle of moderation lie strength of body and steel of will.

Choose easily digestible food: Fresh fruits, raw salad vegetables, rice, wheat, moong, de-fatted dairy products, chowli beans, ladyfingers. At social functions, eat (moderately) with grace whatever is offered.

If you find any regular food causes allergy, swelling, bloating, heartburn, or headache, knock it unhesitatingly out of your shopping list.

Drink 1-2 liters of water daily. Buttermilk is highly recommended too.

Keep your food light, soothing and warm so that it makes you fully satisfied. Chew slowly and relish the food. Appreciate the miracle of being able to eat. Take 1-2 triphala tablets after every meal to aid digestion.

Please understand with great upliftment that you –not the food –have the power to banish negativity. Be vigilant –when a negative thought creeps in, say, “Stop!” Nurture the abundance mentality-feels secure and rooted in the truth that there is plenty of everything for everybody. Freely share recognition that comes your way by warmly acknowledging others. Adopt the philosop0hy, “Life is short, do what’s important.” Make a daily list (please include exercise and meditation) and tick off each task as you finish it. Focused on worthwhile priorities, your mind will blossom in positivity. You won’t do things for happiness, you will express your happiness through doing things.

Variety foods could make people eat more

Those on diet better avoid buffets, for a new study has shown that people tend to underestimate how much of each item is present when faced with a large variety of items. Joseph P.Redden of the University of Minnesota and Stephen J.Hoch of the University of Pennsylvania came to this conclusion after studying consumers’ perceptions of quantity in a set of requirements.

Their aim was to determine how quantity perceptions influence portion sizes.

“Does a bowl with both red blue candles seem to have more or less than a bowl with only one color candy?” the researchers asked.

“Contrary to popular belief, the presence of variety actually makes it seem like there are fewer items”, they added.

The team first exposed participants to images of colored dots and geometric shapes.

“When items differ, people tend to focus on one type or the other, and find it difficult to merge the multiple types into a whole. However, a set composed of only identical items makes it easy for people to perceive the items as a single, unified whole,” the authors wrote.

According to them, focusing on the larger whole makes a set appear to occupy more space.

“Since people rely on spatial area as a cue for quantity, a set appears to have more items when they are all identical,” they said.

Rotavirus

Rotavirus is an infection of the digestive tract to most of infant and young children all over the world. It can be easily transmitted to other person from from an infected individual. A person with rotavirus can have a fever, nausea, vomiting and much more. The virus is spread by hand-to-mouth contact with stool and cause rotavirus. The symptom of this infection includes fever, nausea, vomiting followed by abdominal cramps and diarrhea. This condition may last from 3 to 9 days. The affecters may also experience thirst, restlessness, lethargy, irritability and dry skin.

Rotavirus is mainly affected by virus it must be treated as early as possible. It affects most to the infants; they do know how to treat the infection. Treatment for food poisoning

Food poisoning is more common to humans. It occurs because of the consumption of food with the presence of bacteria, parasites, viruses, toxins or chemicals. It occurs at any stages of both men and women. The symptoms of this severe illness include vomiting, diarrhea, headache and adnominal cramping.
