Mahatma’s kin in race to buy his house

Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grand-daughter is among the prospective buyers of the house where the ‘apostle of peace’ lived in Johannesburg for a year.

Nancy Ball, owner of the house ‘The Kraal,’ for the past 28 years, told PTI on Monday that she was holding talks with several interested parties.

“The great-grand-daughter of Gandhi, Kirti Menon, and a Malaysian businessman want to convert the house in to Gandhi centre and we are currently talking to them about this,” she said.

“As followers of Gandhi we want to ensure that the legacy of Gandhi will be retained and promoted. Therefore, whoever we sell it to will have to promote the Gandhi legacy,” Ms.Ball said.

The selling price of the house in the leafy suburb of Orchards is understood to be more than $350,000.

American artist Ms. Ball said there had been enquiries from the government of India and an Indian business man. They were selling the house as the family was moving to Cape Town for personal reasons, she said. The thatched-roof, rondavel-style house was designed by Gandhiji’s confidant and architect Hermann Kallenbach.
