11 test positive for flu in Coimbatore

Test results received here on Monday from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in New Delhi confirmed that 11 persons had tested positive for the A(H1N1) influenza. They include two doctors, health officials said. These cases add to the four declared on Sunday.

Three men, a woman doctor, six girls and a boy were declared flu positive by health officials on Monday.

The Coimbatore Medical College Hospitals sent for tests throat swabs of seven persons – three women, including a doctor, two men and two boys.

Collector P. Umanath told reporters that all the patients were stable and asked people not to believe rumours that two persons had succumbed to the flu.

“There is no need to panic,” he said after inaugurating an orientation meeting at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for government and private doctors on combating and preventing the flu.

Number of swine flu cases rises to39 in west Bengal

Even as the number of people who tested positive to swine flu in west Bengal rose to 39 on Sunday, the health department issued guidelines to collect throat swabs on a priority basis.

A large number of people rushed to the city’s three swine flu clinics to undergo test. “Seven new A (H1N1) positive cases were detected on Sunday”, said Dr.Taposh Sen, nodal officer of the state health department’s swine flu wing. He said 21 people were undergoing treatment at various state-run facilities.

The large number of samples being sent in to the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), the only swine flu testing facility in West Bengal, has created a backlog, Dr.Sen said.

“This is causing delays in the detection of patients in the detection of patients in the most vulnerable groups”, he added.

A case in point is that of Akash Chowdhury, who was admitted to the R.G.Kar medical college hospital on Tuesday but doctors had to wait till Saturday to know his results. Admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit, his condition was critical and remained unchanged on Sunday, said Dr.Sen.

The other 20 victims, who are currently undergoing treatment, have been kept in the isolation wards of the Infectious Diseases (ID) Hospital at Beliaghata and the M.R.Bhangur Hospital. As the combined capacity of the two hospitals was only 28 beds, the authorities will have to find alternative isolation facilities.

The health department has issued guidelines that samples collected from four categories of patients will be given priority-children up to 5 years and people above 65 years, a person with an underlying disease such as diabetes, asthma or a pregnant woman, a suspect suffering from breathing difficulties, high fever or diarrhoea and an individual who has travelled abroad or has come in contact with a swine flu victim.

Why should we be afraid of swine flu?

We are not really afraid of typhoid, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, diabetes, HIV, malaria and a host of other infectious and non infectious diseases which are flourishing in our country. The apathy towards the basic issues in health care is really appalling. Why should we be afraid of swine flu alone? The medical profession is busy and happy treating diseases, confining to its own insulated and compartments. I happened to read with concern the comments made by some that we are not equipped to face the threat of swine flu, as if we are already well equipped to face the threat of all other communicable diseases; they go on to assert that the problems we face are due to lack of dedicated infections disease departments and dearth of WHO-trained doctors in the medical colleges of Kerala.

A mater of approach

It is true that we need infectious disease units in each medical college, like the ones we already have; but the only problems is that we do not have an adequate number of doctors to spare to improve the services, to do research and surveillance.

The issue can be solved easily by posting a few more doctors for this purpose alone rather than hunting for WHO-trained doctors. Why not the existing system be made to tackle the problem by reorienting and reorganizing than compartmentalizing? In health care (no disease care), there is only doctor-oriented planning and implementation and no community-oriented planning.

A properly trained MBBS doctor or even an educated person with common sense and some training is more than enough to manage the threat of any public health issue. The general medicine department of any medical college can easily tackle all these if they have a few more doctors and isolation wards. We ignore health care and literally manufacture disease of all colour and shades, and finally we have a museum of all diseases. We have already become the diabetic capital of the world, and now we are trying to overtake sub Saharan Africa to win the first place in the number of AIDS cases, malnutrition and environment-related infections, which produce more morbidity and mortality than swine flu.

The developed countries are worried since they have controlled all infections by proper waste management, safe drinking water and good nutrition for all and press the panic button the moment they come across any one of them.

They would have shown similar panic if typhoid, viral hepatitis, leptosirosis or TB occur in much lesser numbers than we see in India. Why we are not similarly worried about these diseases which kill several thousands annually? Let us not panic merely to show that we are also developed and evolved.

The basic issues:

All communicable diseases are flourishing here because of lack of basic health amenities, malnutrition, poor environmental hygiene, unsafe drinking water, etc. people are now exposed to unchecked consumerist forces promoting lifestyle disorders with an even greater impact on us.

One more world environment day had passed – we behaved like the developed world by planting one or two trees here and there and having a talk on ozone layer and green house effect and that is it. We overlook environmental issue like poor waste management and unsafe drinking water everywhere.

We always ignore basic issues and go for knee-jerk reactions to appear big in front of developed countries. We need to do some homework and introspect and bring well-meaning leaders with a vision for the people on top of every system and make changes to achieve health and prosperity and then start panicking at problems like swine flu. We must try to achieve good environmental hygiene and provide safe drinking water for everyone. We must prioritise and spend on health care first and then on disease care.

Exhausted? Get yourself checked

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. This happens either due to defective insulin secrection or action or both helps in burning of glucose obtained from food to give energy. There are two major types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes (earlier called juvenileonset or insulin-dependent diabetes), usually develops in children or young adults. In this type, the body completely stops producing insulin.

In type 2 diabetes (previously known as adult-onset or non insulin-dependent diabetes), the body produces some insulin, but it is not enough. Moreover, there is insulin resistance. In other words, the available insulin does not work properly. In both types of diabetes, the signs and symptoms are similar.

Symptoms of diabetes

These include
*being very thirsty
*frequent urge to urinate
*weight loss
*increased hunger
*blurry vision
*irritability
*tingling hands or feet
*skin, bladder or gum infections
*wounds that don’t heal
*itching in the genital areas
*extreme unexplained fatigue

It must be remembered, however that up to 50 percent of patients with diabetes may not have any symptoms at all. Such cases come out only during routine investigations such as master health checkup and pre-employment checkps.in this case, people live for month, even years without knowing they have the disease. Often diabetes attacks so gradually that symptoms may not even be recognized.

Diagnosis of diabetes.

Diabetes should be ideally diagnosed after an oral glucose tolerance test (GTT). This helps to pickup early status of the disease. The test involves testing of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and two-hour plasma glucose (2hr PG) after intake of 75 Gms of glucose dissolved in water the diagnostic cut off for diabetes and the two “pre-diabetic stages” namely impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) are given in the table below.

Those who have pre-diabetes i.e. IFG or IGT are at increased risk of developing diabetes. Such individuals must undergo a GTT at least once a year and should follow a proper diet and exercise program and if overweight, reduce weight in order to prevent diabetes. Diabetes can also be diagnosed, if random or casual plasma glucose is greater than 200 mg/dl or more on more than two occasions in the presence of symptoms of diabetes.

Thus, early detection is the key to prevention and effective control of diabetes. As diabetes is largely asymptomatic, regular screening for diabetes is of utmost importance. One should not wait for symptoms like thirst, excess urination and weight loss as they are late symptoms. If one has a family history of diabetes or is over weight, one should undergo a prevention diabetic check-up as soon as possible.

The Last 10,000 Years of Human History

The long, nearly flat population curves in certainly masks a number of small-scale trends, both upward and downward. The fossil record is not rich enough to plot a detailed record, but surely at times when weather was pleasant and food from plants and animals was abundant, the human population must have risen. Conversely, when weather was harsh, food was scarce, and diseases were rampant, the human population must have fallen.

The nearly flat population growth curve began to rise more rapidly by about 8,000 years ago when agriculture became established and numerous species of animals were domesticated. The world population is estimated to have been about 8 million people by 10,000 years ago. After the development of agriculture and the taming of animals removed much of the hardship form human existence, the population growth rate is likely to have increased from about 0.0015 percent to 0.036 percent per year, yielding a net gain of 360 people per million per year. This heightened rate of population growth probably raised the number of humans to about 200 million alive at 2,000 years ago.

As humans continued to improve their ability to modify the environment with better shelter and more reliable food and water supplies, the world population grew at faster rates. From about1C.E to 1750, world population grew to about 800 million. Growth was at an average rate of 0.056 percent per year, or another 560 people were added per million per year.

The eighteenth century saw many of the intellectual advances that set the stage for the present phase of cultural change. At long last, the causes of many diseases were being recognized, and the principles of public health were being established. Advances in the medical world greatly improved the odds for the survival of individual humans through their reproductive years. No longer were many mothers and great numbers of children dying childbirth and infancy. Throughout the history of the human race, high rates of birth were required to offset high rates of infant mortality and thus maintain a viable- sized human population.

The eighteenth century saw death rates drop dramatically, but birth rates remained high and population doubling times dropped dramatically, thus population size soared. About 1810, the human population reached 1 billion; by 1925, it had grown to 2 billion; in 1960, it reached 3 billion; by 1974, it was 4 billion; by early 1987, it was 5 billion; in 1999, it reached 6 billion, and is heading toward 7 billion in 2012. Notice the continuing decline in the number of years it takes for a net gain for another I billion people on earth; the effect of exponential growth is racing ahead.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin disease and believed that is mainly caused by the genes of the patients. There are many types of psoriasis. It lists like plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, and erthrodermic psoriasis. The five types of psoriasis have unique signs and symptoms. Among these kinds, plaque psoriasis is the most common one of this disease. This can be appeared as patches of reddish skin covered by silvery white scale on the elbows, knees, scalp, trunk, nail, hands and lower back. The symptoms can also occur at any parts of the body. The complication provides discomfort to the body and affects the normal life.

The guttate psoriasis developed in the body by leaving red spots on the skin. The pustular psoriasis appeared as the white pustules that are surrounded by red skin. The disease of inverse psoriasis is formed by the lesions in skin folds. And the erthrodermic psoriasis is mainly caused by itching, pain, and redness over the skin. This chronic disease can also develop crack, soarness, and bleeding over the skin. If these conditions get severe, the patients can lose out the normal sleep every day and lead him to stick with stress, anxiety, and depression. It is reliable to meet the doctor and treatment depends on the severity of the disease.

But this disease is severe in some part of countries and rare in other countries. It is quite impossible to hide your skin from people’s attention. So, it must be treated and prevented well because the personality is associated with the right quality of life. It might also get people to meet suicide thoughts. Usually, the patients always try to keep out from the society and lead a lonely life.

Psoriasis is not an infectious disease but it is an inherited one. The main causes of this disease are excessive alcohol use, obesity, over exposure to sunlight, stress, cold climate and poor health. So the patients require an intensive treatment for physical and mental well-being.

A balanced diet is the key to a healthy life

Although a balanced diet is important, there are other factors which contribute to a healthy life. People in some cultures do not eat a balanced diet, but use limited food sources are healthy. In addition, lack of stress could well be as important as diet.

One culture-related reason for this theory is environmental or climatic conditions. The Inuit, in the Artic circle, live in harsh surroundings and their major source of food for many months of the year is fish. Nutritionists in industrialized countries would not consider their diet balanced or even healthy, yet Inuit people have flourished on food from the sea for centuries. Another cultural reason is religion. Many Hindus are vegetarian. Again, many dietitians claim that vegetarianism is unbalanced because humans need protein, especially from animals. Hindus, however, seem to be quite healthy and suffer no ill effects from the lack of animal protein.

The major reason for disagreeing with the balanced diet argument, however, is to do with stress. Even though people in the past did not always have a balanced diet, sometimes existing only on potatoes and bread, they lived healthy lives because there was little or no stress of the kind that afflicts urban residents today. Secondly, there is a large percentage of people in developed and developing societies who do their jobs, then relax in front of the television, quite often eating only junk food, but seem healthy enough. They may be spared illness and disease by their relatively stress-free lives.

Baryophobia

Some children and young adults who grow more slowly and have a shorter stature than normal may suffer from baryophobia (literally “the fear of becoming heavy”). Inadequate Growth in children usually results from diseases- commonly, a hormonal or other metabolic abnormality. In the absence of a recognized disease in such children, the possibility of baryophobia, also called nutritional growth failure, should be investigated. This is not a specific psychiatric (DSM-IV) category, but can be serious nevertheless.

This disorder occurs when children are given the same low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet that adults follow. Adults do this in an attempt to prevent children from developing obesity or cardiovascular disease later in life. Today’s parents and caregivers, themselves frequently harassed by weight problems, may be determined that the children in their care will avoid such ordeals. Although these caregivers are well intended, such severely restricted diets are detrimental to children because they don’t supply enough energy to sustain an adequate growth rate. In young adults, low-energy diets may be self-imposed to avoid a perceived risk of obesity.

Because this disorder results largely from lack of appropriate nutrition information leading to poor food choices, nutritional counseling to caregivers and young adults is the most effective response. They need to be informed about the nutrient requirements and normal weight-gain patterns for the relevant age group. This counseling will show caregivers that including some sweets and medium-fat foods in a child’s diet is appropriate. The diet can still minimize saturated fat and cholesterol intake, a more important focus in a diet designed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Supplying adequate carbohydrate, protein, fat and other nutrients is the key to promoting growth in both height and weight during childhood and the young-adult years, and it can be done in a healthful manner.

Treatment of leukemia cancer

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects both children and adults. All types of cancer begin in cells, which make up blood and other issues. Likewise, leukemia is cancer that begins in blood cells and affects the bone marrow which is the soft material in the centre of most bones. It can spreads to other part of the body. People who are exposed to very high levels of radiations are more likely to develop leukemia cancer than other individuals. And also exposure to very high levels of benzene, which is widely user in the chemical industries, can cause leukemia. Workers exposed to formaldehyde may be also at high risk of leukemia. But it is not a contagious disease.

The specific symptoms of this serious cancer includes fever, infection, excessive, breathing, fatigue, weight loss, abnormal bleeding, abdominal pain and enlargement of the lymph nodes, spleen on livers. One who experiences any of these signs can take effective treatment to lead a happy life with loved ones.

No one knows the exact cause of developing leukemia but it can be treatable by registered physician. The main types of leukemia are chronic or acute. A person can visit doctor as early as possible, only they start treating it right way because it tends to worsen quickly. They can giver further treatment to help prevent a leukemia cancer. The treatment can be varying from person to person. Many people want to learn about this disease and their treatment choices. Hematologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologist are the specialists to treat this kind of cancer. Pediatric oncologists and hematologists treat childhood leukemia.

The most common treatment choices for leukemia are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biological therapy, stem cell transplantation and bone marrow transplantation. These are all the effective treatments that can show seculars results. Doctor and feel better. Chronic leukemia patients who do not experience symptoms of leukemia may not require immediate treatment.

Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs kills leukemia cells. The drugs depends on the type of leukemia cancer, the patient may receive a drug or two or more drugs. The drugs may be imposed by mouth, by injection directly in to a vein, through catheter, or by injection in to the spine of the patients of leukemia cancer. It does not harm normal cells. So it is very safe and effective treatment. It is the major form of treatment for leukemia.

Radiation therapy is used to tract with special machine that emirs high-energy rays to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing. The rays may be focused on certain areas of leukemia cells are occurring, or you may receive radiation directed at your whole body.

Bone marrow transplantation helps to replace leukemia bone marrow with leukemia-free marrow. This treatment involves the high doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This aids to destroy leukemia-producing bone marrow. Then this is replaced by bone marrow from a compatible donor.

People can choose right treatment choices and not matter what kind of cancer therapy, they choose, they will all need medication to control pain and side effects.

Pneumonia can be spread to the people through the air of bacteria. People with pneumonia may also experience fever, difficult or painful breathing, painful and productive coughs.

There are several causes of pneumonia. Although most cases of pneumonia are caused by a viral, bacterial or fungal infection and also by the obstruction of bronchial tubes. It can transmit by coughs and sneezes, and by hand washing. These can all easily spread the bacteria from the infected person to other human body. Even if the person is supposed to share drinking glass and eating utensils can also have a high chance to stick with the disease of pneumonia.
