THE Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Port Blair has embarked upon a research project to develop DNA vaccines for ‘Andaman Fever’.
Andaman Fever, also known as Leptospirosis, has been recognized as an emerging global public health problem because of its epidemic proportions and increasing incidences in both developing and developed countries.
As there so far no effective vaccines available to cure the fever, early detection and prompt treatment are very crucial for reducing mortality.
“we at this centre, thought it worthwhile to undertake studies on development of vaccines for Andaman Fever, with the objective of finding a long term solution to this recurring problem, which would ultimately benefit mankind,” Dr Vijayachari, the Director of RMRC told reporters on Monday.
The research would be carried out in collaboration with Prof K Muthumani of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of Pennysilvania University, who is currently visiting RMRC in Port Blair. Over the next few days, he would discuss research methodology and research protocols for the collaborative research initiative.
He would also oversee the progress made on the ongoing collaborative research initiated under Indo-US Project with the University for development of DNA vaccines for Chikun said.
The RMRC centre of Port Blair city has been carrying out research on letospirosis for about one-and –a-half decades.
